The 3-Step Skincare Routine Dermatologists Actually Recommend
The skincare industry thrives on complexity, but dermatologists consistently recommend the same three non-negotiable steps: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer, and a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Everything else — serums, toners, essences, masks — falls into the "nice to have" category. If you do only these three things consistently, your skin will be healthier than 90 percent of people following elaborate multi-step routines with products that often cancel each other out.
Choose a cleanser labeled "gentle" or "hydrating" rather than anything that foams aggressively or promises deep cleaning. Foaming agents strip your skin's natural lipid barrier, triggering overproduction of oil as your skin tries to compensate. A creamy, non-foaming cleanser removes dirt and makeup without that tight, squeaky-clean feeling that people mistake for effectiveness but is actually a sign of barrier damage.
Moisturizer goes on damp skin immediately after cleansing — within 60 seconds. This traps the water already on your skin's surface and prevents transepidermal water loss, which is the primary driver of dryness, fine lines, and irritation. Look for ceramides and hyaluronic acid on the ingredient list. Skip anything with added fragrance, which is the number one cause of skincare-related contact dermatitis.
Sunscreen is the single most effective anti-aging product that exists, full stop. Daily SPF use prevents up to 80 percent of visible skin aging including wrinkles, dark spots, and loss of elasticity. Apply it every morning as your last skincare step, even on cloudy days and even if you work indoors — UVA rays penetrate windows. Reapply every two hours if you are outdoors. This one habit will do more for your skin over a decade than every serum on the market combined.
